Artist: Doreen Dyidi

The Vendor art theme in The Big Issue #303 is planting a seed of a quality you wish to grow in yourself. “What shape waits in the seed of you to grow and spread its branches to a future sky?” David Whyte

Artist: Doreen Dyidi is featured this month in The Big Issue #303 .

Doreen Dyidi, Vendor ArtDoreen is a Big Issue vendor who lives in Delft with two of her children and a grandchild. Doreen lost her husband one of her children in 2013. As a widow and sole breadwinner, she works very hard to support all her family. She likes to sew and not having a sewing machine has been limiting for her. She comes for the art workshops because they are refreshing and they help her get some extra income when her art pieces are bought and when her art is put in the magazine. Doreen says that the extra money that she gets from her art goes a long way as she needs to buy school attires for her children and pay for extra mural activities. She says the Big Issue paid creche fees for her last born.

Her Painting is titled “Forest full of trees”

Other artists in this exploration of self discovery are Sicelo Nodada, Nozibele Jwete, Lizo Qatase, Solomon Masosa and Thabisa Xwethu.

About the Big Issue Vendor Art Programme:

The Art sessions are part of The BIG ISSUE Vendor social development programme.

These take place once per month on the day when Vendors are introduced to the latest magazine and have other trainings and workshops. They all happen on the same day so that the Vendors only need to come into the office once.

The Sessions are open to anyone who is keen to participate, there is no judgment on ability or experience.

Each session offers a theme for the Vendors to explore often inspired from nature and reflection on inner qualities and relationships.  The exercises are designed to warm, nurture and allow for free exploration. There are people who attend regularly and there is great joy when the pictures appear in the magazine or are sold. New vendors are encouraged to join in.
