The Art Theme: In this session the vendors’ imagination was inspired by art images to create their own work and based on the
quote by Leonardo Da Vinci – “The artist sees what others only catch a glimpse of.”
Artist: Nomkitha Maposa
Nomkhita says her 22 years old son Luyanda loves art and inspired her to join art classes. Luyanda is not a professional artist but he loves art and she learns a lot from him. She likes to draw rondavel houses – an African-style hut usually round or oval in shape and is traditionally made with materials that can be locally found in raw form. Rondavel houses remind her of her roots and that is why she enjoys drawing them. Apart from art, she is also passionate about sewing. She would like to join sewing classes to perfect her sewing skills. Nomkhita has a certificate in Home Based Care and she has worked for three security companies before becoming a Big Issue vendor.

About the Big Issue Vendor Art Programme
The Art sessions are part of The BIG ISSUE Vendor social development programme. Elaine Millin is the Art Process Facilitator for Big Issue vendors. Elain is featured in The Big Issue #313
These take place once per month on the day when Vendors are introduced to the latest magazine and have other trainings and workshops. They all happen on the same day so that the Vendors only need to come into the office once.
The Sessions are open to anyone who is keen to participate, there is no judgment on ability or experience.
Each session offers a theme for the Vendors to explore often inspired from nature and reflection on inner qualities and relationships. The exercises are designed to warm, nurture and allow for free exploration. There are people who attend regularly and there is great joy when the pictures appear in the magazine or are sold. New vendors are encouraged to join in.
