#WDC409: Keeping Commuters on the Go

Every day thousands of Capetonians rely on public transport to get to and from places around the city.

To improve the transport information available to them, Go Metro (#WDC409) have created the ‘Cape Town on the Move’ mobile app that captures, manages and presents transport information for the rail and bus network.

The free to use solution was created in honour of World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 (WDC 2014). It was also recognised as a WDC 2014 project for its use of design to elevate communication, transportation and social cohesion.

The app has commuter engagement and civic participation at its core – allowing commuters to post their own updates regarding the status of transport at their particular train station or bus stop. This means that former gaps in a city’s information grid can be filled, curated and distributed by citizens themselves.  Furthermore, the information will be accessible in real time.

After going live in October 2014, the app had over 1 000 people registering and 5 0000 comments within the first month. The project was also a finalist in the PWC Vision to Reality awards.
