Curator Liese van der Watt is an art historian specialising in contemporary African art. The exhibition comprises 126 artworks produced in South Africa since 1994. The title “We the People’ is in the preamble to the South African constitution and in many other democratic constitutions. The power of democracy is invested in us – we the people. And the artworks are a kens to look at what has been happening over the past 30 years. There are four basic themes in We the People: 30 Years of Democracy.
The first is Land – an issue even more current given the current political Trump era. Land and belonging is central to democracy, A central point of conflict in modern history.
Second theme is Activism and Protest and how things change and how to go about that in a democracy.
Environment focuses on how we as a nation work to secure a healthy future.
The last is a broad them – the Stories We Tell about the nuances of our democracy and the people. Who are the people and some of the issues such as LGBT rights and the stories of the indigenous first people.
Carmen Joubert focuses on the artworks in the To Care – Environment area which is dominated by the magnificent Keiskamma tapestry AIDS Altar Piece. Carmen sees how this work brings people together as they take in and admire this work. (See lead photo above)
