Jeannette Unite talks us through her exhibition ‘What’s Yours is Mined’ at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery and explains her ongoing focus on landart is to remind us that we are all complicit as end users of mining.

Jeannette explains that the exhibition ‘What’s Yours is Mined’ follows on her many years focusing on the impact of mining, which was a feature of her exhibitions in London and Europe, and now some of these works are shown for the first time in South Africa. It contains two series of works. The one is based on Bar Codes -works made up of 1.9m high panels implying consumerism. The other series is the Paradox of Plenty, all hand-worked, that reflects on the Curve of Plenty – that is wherever there is extreme wealth underground, the people living on the surface are poor. This was pointed out to her when the President’s sister Bridgette Radebe visited her studio.
Atlas is the other associated exhibition, which evolves from the collection Jeannette has made of vintage aerial photographs which are no longer used. She is sharing this large archive with other artists inviting them to use these photographs to create and inspire works that comment on land. She refers to this body of work as the Unite Project Space, which she hopes to grow. Look out for the selection of work that produces music when you use a scanner over the artwork!
Two very good reasons to visit Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, which also has a 3rd exhibition by Veronica Reid titled In Essence. And then there’s the Clay Museum, part of the complex – making Rust-en-Vrede Gallery & Clay Museum a good reason to head to Durbanville!
