Art: Native Work

by | Mar 10, 2013 | News | 0 comments

With Zuma leading the country, Mandela going back and forth between his Jo’burg home and Qunu and even Biko getting a revisionist “Xhosalisation” at least if Andile Mngxitama’s critique of Xolela Mangcu’s Biko biography is to be believed, tribalism is, it seems, de rigueur again.

Andrew Putter’s latest body of work deals with this trend. Titled Native Work, the installation comprises black-and-white, seemingly ethnographic photographs of contemporary black Capetonians in tribal costume displayed alongside the same subjects photographed in colour and in their contemporary gear. It is an investigation of our perception of the exotic and the authentic.
