Fleur du Cap nominated Nhlanhla Mhkwanazi lights up the stage at the New Kalk Bay Theatre in the newly revised A Man and a Dog.

Featuring the Fleur du Cap nominated Nhlanhla Mhkwanazi [Best Performance in a One Hander] and newly directed by the 2014 winner of the Rosalie van der Gucht Prize for New Directors, Penelope Youngleson, A Man and a Dog previously garnered comments such as “is a joy to behold”, “Mavundla [Mhkwanazi] shines in new play … imaginative and energetic storytelling” and “it would be a sin to miss … a grippingly human story”, “…detailing gives Mavundla’s performance a rich texture…the play moves seamlessly”.

The script has been reworked by Youngleson and Mhkwanazi, while still maintaining the essence of the much-beloved production that toured the country back in 2006 and graced some of our finest stages.

It tells the poignant coming-of-age story of a young Zulu boy’s search for the parents he never knew, and how he finds himself on the long journey back to his home.  Almost ten years later, Mhkwanazi is looking back as a father to his own children and contextualising the story, taking into account current challenges to traditional family values.

The play makes use of oral tradition, song, instrumentation and physical theatre to weave together a retelling of our collective family as South Africans. A rediscovery of ourselves. A remembering of what it means to be of this country.
