Africa Day at Kuier@TheCastle on 25 May is organised by The Craft + Design Institute (CDI), in collaboration with the Castle of Good Hope.
Cape Town locals and visitors are invited to cosy up to creativity this Africa Day by exploring the diversity of local talent and several creative workshops for all ages on 25 May at the Kuier@TheCastle market. This month the market will be warming up visitors inside the Castle’s biggest halls, creating inviting new spaces to explore.
The Kuier@TheCastle market has been growing as Cape Town CBD’s biggest new monthly event, and the April market saw over 2000 visitors and 600 families come together to discover a wide range of creative products from across the city, all set within one of South Africa’s tourism landmarks.
- On Africa Day, from 9am to 4pm, the market offers a unique day out to honour the rich tapestry of the continent through creatives who bring stories and heritage to life through their unique products.
“We’re making full use of the Castle’s biggest halls for the next few coming markets, creating a new experience for the season that continues to offer both locals and visitors new spaces to explore with the charming warmth of creativity. We’re seen such an amazing response to the market, and each month over 80 local creative businesses benefit through a platform that showcases their beautiful products to thousands. We’re looking forward to offering the warmest market in Cape Town for the forthcoming season!” says Erica Elk, CEO of the CDI.
Elk adds that there has been a great uptake of the creative activities offered for kids and each market offers a diverse range of fun workshops that enables them to explore their creativity.
On 25 May, these workshops include:
Richard Kilpert, a creativity and design expert, will run an Africa Day activity for kids inspired by the colours and cultures of our creative continent. This making station at the market will give little ones a rich creative experience, exploring and making headpieces from hand-coloured, recycled materials.
Meschell Beukes of Meschell’s Designs will run beading workshops.
Michelle Hill of Home is Where the Cake Is will run cookie decorating workshops.
Boyi Molefe of Boyi Molefe Art will host wood carving workshops.
This makes the market ideal for the entire family, combining the discovery of exquisite local artisanal products and creative workshops, with delectable local foods and live music performances.
Additionally, all visitors will enjoy access to all the Castle’s museums throughout the day. Be sure to visit the Iziko William Fehr Collection and the Cape Heritage Museum, which both feature on the Art Craft + Museums Map.
