Performances of Helen of Troyeville and Pet-Friendly by Mike van Graan will open in a new theatre venue – the function room of Kloof Street Hotel – at 19:00 on Tuesday 19 May 2026.
Helen of Troyeville features the character Helen Jennings, a former Black Sash member who protested against apartheid, but now in her seventies, she experiences an opportunistic crime. This poetic drama is a reflection on the collision between history and the desire to do good, and is performed by the experienced film, television and stage actress, Zolie Markey.
The charming Marty Kintu then delivers the stand-up commentary piece – Pet-Friendly – with its doses of pet-related humour peppered with satirical commentary about local and global issues.
“Independent theatre-makers are always in need of venues to stage their productions as their primary sources of income. I’m delighted then to explore the Kloof Street Hotel and its function room as a medium-to-long term partner. (The entrance to the hotel is 8 Rheede Road, just round the corner from the Labia Theatre). There is a bar and lounge on the ground floor (as is the function room) for drinks before and after the show as well as during the 20-minute interval between the two shows which are each 55-60 minutes in length. The Sanctuary Restaurant is one floor up, and it would be advisable to book should you wish to have a meal beforehand. (Book HERE ).” – Mike van Graan.
The season runs till Saturday 30 May, whereafter each of the shows will tour in its own right.
“Yours in theatre that seeks to help change the world for the better by changing minds.”
