The Museum of Gems and Jewellery is indeed a gem and Stefan Doveton walks us through this heritage property that dates backs to the mid 1700’s, which has been authentically restored.

Stephan tells us that when being restored, original wall paintings from the late 1700’s were uncovered in Huguenot House. The home provides a wonderful setting to tell the story of South Africa’s minerals and resources – an overview of what makes this country the land of gold and diamonds.
Looking at that history, the starting point is the Blombos Cave and the original jewellery found there, and taking us through to modern manufacturing methods used today.
Focusing on gemstones themselves, the exhibits cover what is unique to South Africa, including a replica of the astonishingly large 3 106 carat Cullinan diamond.
Jewellery produced by Prins and Prins is on display. Stephan notes that Prins and Prins have won the top 5 places in the PlatAfrica Jewellery Awards for several years – both in the student and professional divisions.

A new exhibition for this month is focused on Vladimir Tretchikoff, who would have celebrated his 110th birthday in December. Prins and Prins have curated a selection of Gold Coins based on his 10 Commandments, which will be on display.
