Within this Ongoing Dialogue between Material, Memory & Meaning that Riven finds its Resonance

EBONY/CURATED is delighted to present Riven, the latest solo exhibition by South African ceramic artist Hennie Meyer, opening at their post fire, newly re-opened Bordeaux House gallery from 11:30 am, Saturday 6th December 2025.

Renowned for his distinctive approach to ceramic art, Meyer’s practice is defined not only by the striking appearance of his works but, more importantly, by the thoughtful processes they embody. Over the span of a 42-year career, Meyer has introduced singular designs that evolved into distinct ranges, and through deliberate revisioning, transformed into new expressions of thinking, seeing, and presentation.

Hennie Meyer, Riven,

Riven serves as Meyer’s ceramic autobiography. The works reveal his diversity of form, underpinned by analytical reasoning and strategic methodology. Each piece explores the fit of individual parts, unique in their own right, yet cohesive in their assembly, reflecting the dynamics of social structure where continuous interaction shapes collective identity.

  • For Meyer, belonging to the whole is inescapable, yet within that framework lies the freedom to redefine individuality.
  • Each new design becomes a meditation on the balance between conformity and creative independence.

The title Riven refers to something split or divided, fractured by force rather than violence.
This concept mirrors Meyer’s process of salvaging and preserving elements of earlier works, whether discarded or broken, and reincorporating them into new creations. In doing so, he extracts meaning and value from the past, embedding these fragments into fresh forms. The act becomes one of both preservation and reanimation.

Ebony/Curated, Bordeaux House,

Far from mere bricolage, the simple assembly of diverse materials, these are biographical constructs, composed with intentional fragments that hold personal, historical, and aesthetic significance. They capture the interplay between past and present, memory and renewal. Moreover, Meyer regards these works as ongoing narratives: once they enter new collections, they continue to evolve as new meanings and sentiments are layered upon them.

It is within this ongoing dialogue between material, memory, and meaning that Riven finds its resonance, inviting viewers to consider not only the construct, but also its ever-shifting context.
