Pop-up Concerts at St Georges Cathedral

A new series of pop-up concerts will be taking place at St Georges Cathedral over December and January featuring Cape Philharmonic musicians violinist Samantha Durrant and Maja van Dyk on viola, along with pianist Albert Combrink and Dylan Tabisher on classical marimba.

The concerts take place to the side of the church, for those wanting to focus on the music, while others are welcome to walk around the cathedral undisturbed.

Each session lasts between 30 to 40 minutes, featuring different musicians (as per the schedule below), and the musicians will introduce their programme in a relaxed and interative way. Perfect for both tour groups and locals wanting to cool down during the day.

There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcome at the door – proceeds go directly to the cathedral and the musicians. There is the added advantage that classical music is ‘unplugged’ and will not be affected by load shedding!

The initiative came together through Cape Town Concert Series manager Louise Howlett and violinist Samantha Durrant who both felt there was a lack of chamber music available during the festive season when so many visitors are in the Cape and would be familiar with the tradition of music being played in churches for people to walk in, sit and enjoy the peace and calm. St Georges Cathedral generously allowed the musicians the space to perform in their sublime surroundings and donations given will go directly to the musicians and church.
