Dali Tambo, takes us through the Long March to Freedom, the exhibition he created to honour the struggle stalwarts, who over a period of 350 plus years gave their lives to the liberation of their country from the 1600’s until today. They all have to have gone to their ancestors, and have passed on. Prof Kader Asmal was a giant in the struggle for liberation. He is known internationally for his intellectual ability, for his dedication to the struggle, his morals, for his ethics and his sacrifice.
There is a need to honour this man.- remember the man forevermore in bronze.
It is tragic that this unveiling happens a week after Louise Asmal, also a great lady and struggle stalwart passed away.
Dali emphasises the importance of honouring him and educating people and the youth about who he was. An ordinary man who did extraordinary things.
The procession at Long March to Freedom is the biggest bronze sculpture park in the world with 102 sculptures at present. Different sculptors have contributed to this ‘Academy of Sculpture’. It is a world class exhibition of leading South African sculptors. it is a beautiful experience to be immersed amongst these 102 bronzes and walk from the back to the front from the warrior kings of the past to Madiba and his generation in the front..
The unveiling sends up a beacon of thanks to heaven for this tribute to Prof Kader Asmal and his beautiful wife.
It is interesting to note that the idea for The Long March to Freedom came when Dali Tambo, visited the grave of his late father, anti-apartheid politician Oliver Tambo, and told him, “There isn’t a statue of you in this country and I’m planning to do one.” From the grave his father spoke to him and said, “Don’t do it for me, do it for all of them.”
