Magnet Theatre's Founder & Co-Artistic Director- Mark Fleishman in his Final UCT Production

The Centre for Theatre, Dance & Performance Studies (CTDPS) at the University of Cape Town is proud to announce its 2025 graduating production: A Tempest by Aimé Césaire.

  • 3 PERFORMANCES ONLY @ The Little Theatre, Hiddingh Campus, on 26 and 27 September.

This landmark staging marks the final UCT production directed by Professor Mark Fleishman, a transformative force in South African theatre and education since 1991. After more than three decades of groundbreaking teaching, directing, and artistic leadership, Fleishman closes his UCT chapter with a production that embodies the urgency and relevance of theatre today.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Originally written in 1969, Aimé Césaire’s A Tempest is a radical reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Infused with Césaire’s anti-colonial vision, the play reframes Prospero as a colonising master and Caliban as a voice of rebellion and self-assertion. With lyrical power and political intensity, the work confronts audiences with the legacies of empire and the complexities of liberation.

“This production is the culmination of four years of rigorous training,” says Professor Mark Fleishman. “Césaire’s text gives our students a unique opportunity to explore decolonial storytelling in a way that resonates deeply in our South African context.”
