When We See Us : A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, an exhibition that places a focus on painting, specifically works produced from the 1920s to the present, is now open at Zeitz MOCAA.
“Over the last decade, figurative painting by Black artists has risen to a new prominence in contemporary art,” says Koyo Kouoh, Executive Director and Chief Curator at Zeitz MOCAA, who talks us through some aspects of this extensive exhibition on the Sanlam Arts Round Up on Fine Music Radio.

Koyo tells us what we can expect in this extensive exhibition that has more than 200 works by 157 artists. This is a bringing together of black artists from Africa and the diaspora and reflects on Black joy. When We See Us celebrates the resilience, essence and political charge of Black joy.
The exhibition is organised around six themes — The Everyday, Joy and Revelry, Repose, Sensuality, Spirituality, and Triumph and Emancipation. It is furthermore accompanied by a sonic translation, compiled by South African composer and sound artist Neo Muyanga.
As Koyo explains, figuration has re-emerged and regained attention – but this is nothing new.
And trends are, what she wisely contends, what she stays away from – avoiding anything as transient as trendspotting!
When We See Us : A Century of Black Figuration in Painting is a conversation that you will want to engage in and should not be missed!
