Art on the Mountain continues…What began as a seven-week creative journey on the summit of Table Mountain, in collaboration with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, has grown into something even more meaningful.Â
During October and November 2025, fynbos artist Hermien van der Merwe, moved her studio onto the mountain and invited artists to join her for day sessions – creating work inspired by Cape Town, our iconic Mountain and its extraordinary fynbos.
“Now, we are excited to present this body of work by 45 participating artists across two upcoming group exhibitions” Hermien van der Merwe.
• Suidoosterfees | 29 April – 3 May | Artscape Theatre Centre

Over the course of seven weeks, 64 South African artists accepted the invitation to join the initiative for one- or two-day creative sessions. The venue, along with access via the Cableway, was generously sponsored by the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, making it possible for artists to work within one of the country’s most iconic natural environments.
At its heart, Art on the Mountain was a celebration of place – of Table Mountain, the city below, and the extraordinary fynbos biome that thrives there. For many South Africans, and especially Capetonians, the mountain is more than a landmark; it is a constant presence, woven into daily life. This shared sense of connection formed the foundation of the project.
Each participating artist brought a distinct perspective, medium, and approach. The group represented a wide range of ages, backgrounds, and disciplines, including oil, acrylic, and watercolour painting, mixed media, photography, pen and ink, ceramics, sculpture and plein-air practices. What united them was a shared source of inspiration: the natural beauty of Cape Town.
These exhibitions celebrate not only the artworks, but the shared experience of creating within one of South Africa’s most iconic natural environments.
“We would love for you to join us as Art on the Mountain continues its journey from summit to gallery,” says Hermien van der Merwe
