Nokuzola Zoe Bikwana is once again having this production of “You’re Safe Here” presented with Iziko Museums at the Planetarium in the Gardens.
“You’re Safe Here will form part of the Suidoostefees, which is such an honour for me. The play is free, people just need to purchase the entrance to the Planetarium” .- Nokuzola Zoe Bikwana
Sisi, a survivor of Apartheid, carries the scars of her experiences with deep sensitivity toward others who face oppression. Drawn to the struggles of fellow Africans fleeing oppressive governments, she befriends a family of congregants from Rwanda and eventually offers them shelter in her yard. As their bond grows, Sisi and her friends find solace in reflecting on their shared pasts, grappling with the endurance it took to overcome their hardships. However, the friendship is tested when Sisi uncovers a secret her Rwandan friends had hidden—some truth that forces her to question the very nature of kindness.
How could those who suffered the atrocities of genocide conceal their pain, and even perpetuate unkindness? As Sisi confronts this revelation, she is also forced to reckon with her own buried truths, discovering a striking parallel between her secrets and those of her friends.
The play probes the human capacity to endure, forgive, and connect amidst the shadows of trauma while exploring the unsettling potential for cruelty even among those who have known suffering.
The play is under the Suidoosterfees , it will be hosted by Iziko Musuem, Mindspace (Planetarium).
