Samuel Nnorom – What Tomorrow Holds, an exhibition of textile art at THK Cape Town, runs until Wednesday 26 June – so hurry and be sure not to miss!
With textile artists continuing to rise in the international art world, don’t miss your last chance to see multi-award-winning artist Samuel Nnorom’s first solo exhibition at THK Gallery, What Tomorrow Holds, with exhibition text by Nkgopoleng Moloi. This special presentation in Cape Town closes next Wednesday, 26 June, ahead of THK’s first participation in Art Cologne later this year.
In his solo exhibition, ‘What Tomorrow Holds’, Samuel Nnorom meditates on history through material, archive and process. Through his fabric-covered foam balls, Nnorom uncovers layers of time (its effect on material culture, community, and the environment). His tapestries carry the rich methods of crafting, making, living and communing in West Africa and by extension, other African countries with similar histories.
Inspired by the Igbo adage ‘Onye Ma Echi’ meaning ‘Who Knows Tomorrow’ the exhibition title gestures to the precarity and unknowability of what lies ahead while reflecting on Igbo culture’s influence on Nnorom’s work. He says; “It encapsulates the idea of uncertainty. Life is unpredictable and filled with secrets and mysteries. My art explores the human condition within this uncertainty, using familiar materials to symbolise the facade we often wear to hide our true selves. Just as we cover our bodies, we also cover our world, creating a bubble of illusion. But deep within, there are truths we conceal, connecting us all in our shared vulnerability and resilience.” Nkgopoleng Moloi
Currently living and working in Nsukka, Samuel Nnorom holds an MFA in sculpture from the University of Nigeria. He cumulates numerous workshops and residencies in England, South Africa, Burkina Faso, France, Senegal and Nigeria, numerous solo shows, group shows and art fairs globally, as well as being commissioned several times for public works in his home country. He won the Africa Prize 2021: Strauss & Co and Cassirer Welz Award, and a global prize for “Art for Change Award 2022” organised by M&C Saatchi Group, ex aequo the Ettore e Ines Fico Prize at the Artissima Fair 2023 and was a finalist for the Craft Council and Brookfield Properties Award UK 2023.
