Vusumzi Nkomo, Propositions for Dis-Order

,

Propositions for Dis-Order – the title of the exhibition – borrows from 1960’s conceptual art, but also is looking at colonisation as a form of disorder – a fundamental restructuring of society and a situation of disorder. The use of bricks references American sculptor Carl Andre, who shocked the artworld with piles or stacks of bricks as an art form.  Vusi mentions that SA art critic, Sean O’Toole, has written about the brick as a form of political resistance and protest. There is a shift when  it moves into an art space and begins to shift. A brick is dead, not organic as a plant but also a form that is used in resistance not only in South Africa and in the gallery as a form.

The message of the plant forms used, and actually growing in the gallery borrows heavily from his research into George Hibbert, who has many plants named after him. He was in parliament and banking, and in SA funded botanical research, and yet anti slavery emancipation.

Vusumzi NkomoMessages about being a black artist? Trying to get across what it means to be a black artist and again referring back to the 1960’s and ’70’s , the time of minimalist gestures.
