Each year on 16 June, South Africa commemorates Youth Day, a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and sacrifice of the young people who helped shape our nation’s path to freedom.
The Long March to Freedom pays special tribute to the brave students of the 1976 Soweto Uprising: youth who stood up against injustice and sparked a turning point in our history. Their legacy is immortalised in the lifelike bronze figures that line the procession. Among them, young freedom fighters who remind us that change is often led by those with the most to gain: the youth.
- Youth Day is more than a reflection on the past. It’s a call to action to continue building a country where young voices are heard, opportunities are shared, and education is a right, not a privilege.
“As you walk the Long March to Freedom this Youth Day, we invite you to reflect on the power of youth and the role each new generation plays in protecting the democracy that was so bravely fought for. This is more than history, it’s a living legacy.”
